Immersion into the Tradition

23.4.13

This week, we at Yogayama are hosting David Robson while he facilitates an in depth study into the tradition of Ashtanga yoga. As you can guess, there is much to uncover when it comes to the simplicity of the practice, the most important part. With attending to the drishti  in each posture and the energetic components of bandhas and the asana, there's a reason why the wisdom of the practice only arises through doing it. However, taking the time to study each component with curiosity and contemplation builds greater awareness, hence the opportunity to immerse oneself into the practice of Ashtanga yoga. We are deeply grateful to David who has taken the time to extend his experience to the international students participating in the immersion.

David Robson is the co-owner and director of Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto. With 100+ students each morning, he leads one of the world’s largest Mysore programs. After completing a degree in Comparative Religion, David made his first trip to Mysore, India in 2002, where he initiated studies with his teacher R. Sharath Jois. Since then he has returned annually to deepen and enrich his practice and teaching. David also teaches internationally. For more info visit www.learntofloat.com.

Traveling to Tronto to share the practice with the AYCT community was really inspiring. AYCT you say? Otherwise know as, Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Toronto, well, if you haven't heard this is where one of the largest Mysore practice communities resides outside of Mysore, India. Yeah, really amazing. With 100+ practitioners daily and somedays close to 150, let's just say there is a multitude of tapas being burned in one room, haha. Gotta love it. The owner and director of AYCT is David Robson, and the one heading the Mysore program. So if you find yourself traveling to Toronto this is the place to go.

In the Spring we'll have the pleasure of hosting David Robson at Yogayama, as he leads a 7-day immersion for teachers and established students of the practice of Ashtanga yoga. During this course learning the traditional Sanskrit count with be covered, anatomy, adjustments for the postures of Primary series, and everything else in between. I'll be posting details of the schedule very soon!

He brings with him an amazing passion and insight for the practice of Ashtanga yoga. This is not to be missed! Personally, I feel he is one of the most talented and committed teachers of his generation in the world. To have built what he has in the Toronto yoga community is something that is never easy, and is a testament to his sincere vision and energy. However, don't take my word for it, experience for yourself. There will be something to be learned no matter what level in the practice you find yourself in. All levels welcome.

Led Primary 9:00 - 11:00AM
Join David Robson for the Led Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga following the traditional Sanskrit count. All levels of practitioner are welcome to attend.

The Practice and Philosophy of Vinyasa
12:00 - 2:00PM
In Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, vinyasa means moving/breathing system. More specifically, it also refers to counted movements that are done in our practices. The vinyasa system, when followed correctly, makes the Astanga practice a moving meditations. This workshop will explore the philosophy and practice of vinyasa as it is traditionally taught in Ashtanga Yoga. It's open to all levels.

Arm-Balancing 3:00 - 5:00PM
In the Astanga practice there are many movements that require us to put all of our weight into our hands. Jump-backs, jump-throughs, and the particular vinyasa from certain poses are all moments of arm-balancing. This workshop will teach you the principles of alignment and technique that are common to all arm-balances, and will help you find more ease in the air. This workshop is open to practitioners of all levels.
